Mission and Vision

Updated: Oct 19, 2009

CLEAR BLUE SKY is dedicated to providing opportunities for people living with brain diseases to nurture the power and strengths resident within their nature so that they can develop a joyous, purposeful life.

CLEAR BLUE SKY's vision is that one day people with mental illnesses will be treated as equals in our society.

CLEAR BLUE SKY is based on the ideology that states: “...Recovery from serious mental illness must involve the whole person in a vital and culturally sensitive community. This community must offer respect, hope, mutuality and unlimited opportunity to access the same worlds of friendship, housing, education and employment as the rest of society.” CLEAR BLUE SKY aspires to be such a community.

The uninitiated tends to reserve their worst accommodations for people with mental illnesses, when by the virtue of the liberal doses of hardship and misery served up by brain diseases—they deserve the best. At CLEAR BLUE SKY we offer compassion and understanding not aversion and neglect.

CLEAR BLUE SKY is a community-based approach which complements psychiatric treatment and social services.

CLEAR BLUE SKY hosts a Clubhouse: day program for people with mental illnesses. Those who are recently released from medical care, or who are having trouble fitting in to the community, are invited to participate in the CLEAR BLUE SKY program.

CLEAR BLUE SKY's Clubhouse is the first of its kind in the Caribbean. Although there are over 400 Clubhouses worldwide, the Clubhouse goals, procedures and successful results are not well known here.

Our Clubhouse is like any other. Clubhouses follow an approach which is based on a work-ordered day. Members have a key role in organizing and accomplishing Clubhouse activities. Those who want paid employment are given opportunities in local community businesses and are helped to become successful employees. Part-time paid work is definitely an option. We have learned that meaningful work, especially paid employment, is a powerfully restorative force in life and for self-esteem. There are no patients, consumers or clients, just members and staff working together as colleagues.

Our programs offer opportunities for individuals to participate in their own recovery by working and socializing together in a safe and nurturing environment. We feel even the most severely disabled psychiatric client has value, and potential for making some contribution to society. Having someplace to go, something to do, someone to see are activities of incalculable value to people who are mentally ill.

Participation in the various programs develops confidence. Work and social activities are meaningful and help members regain their senses of self-worth, confidence and purpose. Any type of constructive effort is given ongoing support by the other members and the staff of the Clubhouse.

But we can only help those people who know about us and seek us out. So we urge you to come and see what we have to offer. Why don't you find out whether we could be of service to someone you love.
